40G: Prague - Frankfurt

Prague, Frankfurt - 27 June, 2011

Dial Telecom has successfully tested its DWDM technology and increased the capacity from 10G to 40G for Internet, voice and data services between Prague and Frankfurt am Main.

Dial Telecom a. s., a leading Czech provider of telecommunication services, has in June increased the capacity of its optical network between Prague and Frankfurt am Main, from 10G to 40G. By doing so, it has assured a head start in capacity against the rising demand of customers for many years into the future. The increase was achieved using DWDM technology, which allows transmission of a large variety of signals on a single optical fiber.

The rising needs of customer for quality data service capacity has prompted Dial Telecom to implement DWDM technology in a capacity of n*40G. Dial Telecom successfully ran testing and measuring of the 40G traffic in its DWDM backbone network in the middle of June, 2011. The testing was carried out during full traffic on the international DWDM route from Prague to Frankfurt am Main in a length of 700 km.

The 40G transponders were directly installed into the existing 10G DWDM system without suspension of current services and with no effect on their operations. Long-term measuring (>24 hours) proved to be free of any rate of error and no further measures were necessary for correction of dispersions or separations from the 10G traffic. On the contrary, the system showed reserves which would allow the use of 40G cards over an even greater distance.

This jump will allow us to provide data services to our customers without any limitation on capacity for many years into the future. At the same time, we have a technological head start and are providing top quality services in the field of optical networks and DWDM technology,” says Dalibor Premus, Chief of Product Management of Dial Telecom a.s. “We are happy that the testing of the new technology went without any problems,” Dalibor Premus added.

The attention Dial Telecom has given to its choice of technology, the planning, design, construction and operations of the transmission network, have proven to really pay in the long-term view and allow Dial Telecom customers to also benefit. Its customers can now make use of the 40G transmission service on the backbone international and national DWDM lines of the Dial Telecom network.

Information about DWDM technology
DWDM is dense wave-length division multiplexing. It allows the transmission of a large variety of signals on a single optical fiber. For data transmission, each individual signal uses a laser light with a different wavelength, or frequency (so called color), which is generated by lasers in optical transponders. The light signals of various colors are then transmitted together via an optical fiber and are amplified several times along the entire route. At the end of the transmission route, the signals of various colors are again separated from each other and subsequently detected by a receiver of the relevant target transponder.

Information about Dial Telecom a.s. (Czech Republic)
The joint-stock company Dial Telecom is a provider of a complex portfolio of voice, data and Internet services with guaranteed service availability all over the Czech Republic through its own unified optical network. The length of the provided optical cable routes of Dial Telecom currently amounts to 4,600 kilometers within the Czech Republic and with 185 kilometers of the cable routes consisting of approximately 12,000 kilometers of optical fibers within the metropolitan network in Prague. The Dial Telecom network has its central monitoring center in Prague. The network monitoring, as well as the customer support center, are in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Dial Telecom is a holder of ISO 9001:2009 Quality Management, ISO 14001:2005 Environmental Management and ISO 27001:2006 Information Security Management certificates, i.e. protection of sensitive information from unauthorized access.
