
TRUNK.WAY IS A SERVICE ALLOWING THE INTERCONNECTION OF A CUSTOMER´S SIP SERVER TO A PROVIDER’S SIP GATE
TRUNK VOIP is designed for customers operating their own VoIP exchange. The exchange can be directly connected to the Dial Telecom VoIP exchange using the IP protocol. Calls are then routed to the voice networks of Dial Telecom or other operators. Dial Telecom a.s. assigns its customers with a number range (typically 10, 100, 1000). The assigned number range usually corresponds to one static (without registration) login account. This service is designed for companies and providers of telecommunication and Internet services who operate or want to operate their own VoIP exchange.
The customer’s VoIP server is typically connected directly to the Dial Telecom gateway. The customer’s VoIP server should be located at a public IP address. Address translation (NAT) is not a suitable solution; due to its complexity, we do not recommend it. In the case of address translation, the customer would have to secure the correct mapping of IP addresses and ports for the SIP/SDP and RTP protocols. For the service to be guaranteed, it needs to be operated on a quality connection provided by Dial Telecom a.s. Only systems operating through the Dial Telecom administration are covered by guarantee. The line with the customer VoIP switchboard connection always has to be configured to provide sufficient bandwidth and connection quality for the voice calls needs.
Risk of misuse
Operating one’s own voice exchange includes the risk of unauthorized misuse of the customer VoIP server occurring and of the network infrastructure through which the customer’s VoIP server is connected to Dial Telecom. Misuse through an attack such as this on an exchange is typically for routing a large number of calls to exotic destinations. Within a short time, damages in the millions can arise for the customer. Dial Telecom a.s. in not liable for any possible misuse of voice exchanges and network infrastructure that are not under its own administration.
Only the VoIP exchange administrator can lower the probability of such attacks. Therefore, Dial Telecom a.s. advises following the security recommendation stated on www.dialtelecom.cz in the “For Customers” section or using other telephone services in which the technical administration of the exchange is fully under control of Dial Telecom (for example the VOIP service).
